EA cancels Black Panther game but continues Marvel collaboration with three projects

Although they canceled the development of the Black Panther game, which they had been working on for two years, Electronic Arts did not end their cooperation with Marvel - they are still working on three superhero projects.

This week, the publishing house Electronic Arts canceled the development of the game Black Panther in order to "focus on significant growth opportunities". It sounded like they were done with superhero-themed games, but the company says that's not the case.

For some time in the future, they plan to move away from licensed franchises, but continue to work with Disney and Marvel on projects that have already been agreed upon.

This includes "at least three" more games with Marvel heroes, of which only one has been announced - Iron Man, which is being developed by the studio responsible for the Dead Space remake. Of course, that's the way it is at the moment and it doesn't mean that plans won't change. Black Panther was in development for almost two years, so the development of the game was stopped anyway before we saw a single second of the game.

Superhero games

From what we know, superhero games are still attractive to other publishers. While Xbox is preparing Marvel’s Blade, PlayStation is counting on Marvel’s Wolverine. It looks like we’ll see at least one more Spider-Man game, with Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra delayed to 2026.

Superhero games haven’t exactly been a hit in recent years. Marvel’s Avengers, Gotham Knights, and Suicide Squad all flopped, and even the high-quality Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy wasn’t a financial success by Square Enix’s standards.

Fans of such films as well as video games are eagerly waiting to see what EA will offer us this time. There is no doubt that the expectations are high, but so far we have also been disappointed, so a dose of caution always remains.

From Electronic Arts, they say that fans will not be disappointed, considering that these are projects that have been worked on dedicatedly.
