Gregg Popovich, the legendary coach of the San Antonio Spurs and the most decorated coach in NBA history, has officially retired after an incredible 29 seasons as head coach.

While he will no longer be the head coach, he will remain with the club as president, continuing to play a key role in shaping the future of the franchise.

“While my love and passion for the game remain, I’ve decided it’s time to step away as head coach,” Popovich said in a team statement. “I’m forever grateful to the wonderful players, coaches, staff and fans who allowed me to serve them as the Spurs head coach and am excited for the opportunity to continue to support the organization, community and city that are so meaningful to me.

Career

During his impressive career from 1996 to 2025, Popovich led the Spurs to 2,265 regular-season games, recording 1,412 wins – the most in NBA history. Under his leadership, the Spurs won five championships (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2014) and made the playoffs for 22 consecutive years, building a dynasty known for team spirit and talent development.

Known for his adaptability and work with players such as Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Kawhi Leonard, Popovich was named NBA Coach of the Year three times and is inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2023. In addition to club successes, he also led the American national team to Olympic gold in 2021.

His retirement marks the end of an era in NBA history, but also the beginning of a new one for the Spurs, who can still count on his experience and vision in making key decisions.
