Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris may share a McLaren garage, but they clearly don't share the same opinion when it comes to their car's dominance in Jeddah.
After the Australian celebrated for the third time this season and for the first time in his career sat at the top of the general classification of Formula 1, his teammate Norris had a different view of what was happening on the track.
Norris finished the race in fourth position, which further jeopardized his championship ambitions, especially after the incident in Q3 qualifying when he damaged his car and started from 10th place.
Norris reacts
After the race, Norris was quite harsh in his comments towards those who, in his opinion, exaggerate McLaren's advantage over the competition.
"They're just as fast in qualifying as they are in most sessions, they're just as fast as us in the race. People, just because we're fast in practice, they keep talking all this nonsense. They can say whatever they want. We don't believe we're that far ahead, as it turned out. I think Max was probably the fastest today, if it wasn't for that five-second penalty. We still have a lot of work to do," Norris told Sky Sports.
His words did not go unnoticed – Piastri was quickly asked for a comment in the official FIA press conference after the race.
"No. I think our car was still faster," Piastri answered clearly.
"I think it was difficult to be behind the others in the dirty air. Max was definitely faster than I expected during the race. I expected him to be fast on one lap, that's not a surprise, but in the race I didn't think we would have this many problems at the end of the stint on medium tires."
Piastri stressed, however, that while Red Bull was not far behind, McLaren still held a slight advantage.
"So obviously we have some work to do. Our car is still very good, but if you look at the track layout here and at Suzuki, those are the two that are the most similar so far, and that's where Max and Red Bull were closest. I think we still have the advantage. It may not be a big one on these surfaces and track layouts, but we still have a very strong car."
