John Fury has spoken out for the first time since his son Tyson Fury was defeated twice by Oleksandr Usyk last year, with a scathing indictment of the boxing establishment. He believes "the belts were stolen" and his son now feels "there is no more Gypsy King", reports TalkSport.
Fury lost the undisputed heavyweight title in May last year in an epic split decision clash with Usyk. They met again in December, and this time the Ukrainian won convincingly - all three judges' scores read 116-112. Usyk thus became the undisputed champion and cemented his place in history, while Fury, now beltless, announced - and retired for the fourth time - his retirement.
For John Fury, however, the truth is different. - He had those belts, but they were simply taken from him. When they pay you a lot of money, it's like they don't want you to stay champion anymore. Perhaps they couldn't or didn't want to pay Tyson the same amount again if he kept the belts.
John, who was part of the corner for the first fight, didn't attend the rematch, describing the reason as "personal". But now he openly expresses doubts about the fairness of the whole situation, convinced that his son didn't lose a single fight.
- For me, he won both fights. He didn't look great in the second, and in the first he was overloaded with training. He had seven weeks of preparation, then he cut himself, then three weeks off, then another eight weeks of camp. He was an overtrained warrior in the ring.
Advice
John reveals that he advised Tyson to refuse the fight due to fatigue and pay the fine, but his son didn't want to risk a million-dollar penalty. - I told him: 'Take the fine, they won't fine you because without you there is no fight.' They couldn't replace him.
As for a potential comeback against Anthony Joshua, John is not optimistic. According to him, Tyson has no interest in boxing after the "robbery" and no longer sees himself as a champion. – They took the biggest seller from the game. Without Tyson, there are no dancers. Usik and Dubois? It won't fill Wembley like Tyson.
But despite everything, John shows respect for Usyk as a fighter, although he clearly emphasizes the difference in marketing appeal. - Usik is an excellent fighter, but he has no charisma, no pulling power. Great fights require more than talent. And Tyson Fury was and remains the best dance partner that boxing has had.
On July 19, Usik will defend his crown in a rematch against Daniel Dubois, whom he stopped in 2023 after a controversial situation - a blow to the body that the referee declared low. That moment is still hotly debated, and Dubois himself believes he was damaged at the time. Now he has an opportunity for redemption - but also for the continuation of the historical chain that was started by Tyson Fury.
Although Gypsy King has been silent since announcing his retirement, his father's rhetoric clearly indicates that the wound has not yet healed - neither in a sporting nor a personal sense.
