The Phoenix Suns played a great game against Philadelphia, securing an impressive 118-116 victory in a tense atmosphere. The standout player of the match was Phoenix's Kevin Durant. The 38-year-old put on an impressive performance, scoring 35 points. What’s also drawing attention is his new contract; Durant will remain with the Suns through the end of next season.
If he decides not to extend his contract with Phoenix, he will need to look for a new team.
In a post-game interview, Durant was somewhat mysterious, refusing to reveal much about his future. He emphasized that his focus is on the game and helping the team succeed.
"I'm not thinking about that right now. What I want is to give my best and stay fully focused on the game. I haven't even discussed my contract with the team; all I'm concerned with is focusing on basketball."-Durant said.
It seems the NBA veteran is concentrating just on the court. The fact that Durant has been a fixture in the spotlight for so many years speaks volumes about how crucial he is; not just to the team he plays for, but to the entire NBA. Beyond that, his drive to continue competing at a high level, even as many players his age are transitioning into coaching roles, is something to be truly admired. The American basketball star is determined to help Phoenix achieve its goals in the coming seasons.
"I’m blessed to be part of the league for 18 years, and I’m really not focused on money. What I’ve always focused on is how to get better and improve my game—that's been my main goal from the start. I have this season and next left, and that's what I’m thinking about," Durant continued.
The former University of Texas student entered the league in 2007, selected by the Seattle SuperSonics with the second overall pick. Over his career, he has also played for the Golden State Warriors, Brooklyn Nets, and Phoenix Suns. In 18 seasons, Durant has averaged 27.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.7 steals per game, earning an MVP award in 2014.
It's clear that even as Durant enters his 37th year, he still has plenty to offer.
Kevin Durant reacts to the criticism from ESPN's Stephen A. Smith
The 38-year-old has been on the NBA scene for many years, so he’s become used to the criticism, although it probably bothered him more in the past than it does now. Durant is tired of the constant critiques, particularly those from ESPN's Stephen A. Smith.
In a recent media interview, the Phoenix Suns player responded to Smith's criticisms, expressing disbelief that anyone would take him seriously. Durant believes Smith isn’t in a position to offer basketball criticism, as he hasn’t been part of any basketball-related story; whether on the court, in a film, or during practice.
"Yeah, Stephen A., I don’t understand how people even listen to Stephen A.," Durant said, as quoted by USA Today.
"I’ve been in the league for 18 years. I’ve never seen Stephen A. at a practice, or a film session, or a shoot-around. I’ve never seen him anywhere but on TV talking (expletive) about players. … He’s a clown to me. He’s always been a clown. You can write that, too."
Durant stressed that, over the years, he has grown as a person and a player. As he has gained more experience in the league, he has become more comfortable with himself and with speaking in front of crowds. This amazing player pointed out that he's always been committed to fully immersing himself in the game, not just for his benefit but for the team as a whole.
Durant rejected the idea that he's distant or silent in the locker room, emphasizing that the image of him being quiet, not engaging with teammates or coaches, is completely unrealistic and ridiculous.
The experienced basketball player believes he serves as a strong example for young players in many ways. His desire, effort, and energy are evident in every game he plays. Of course, it’s hard to expect someone in the later stages of their career to be as dominant or impressive as they were in their prime, but what Kevin has accomplished over the years is truly amazing. Through his performances, he has shown that he can be a role model for the young players who are just starting to make a name for themselves in the basketball world.
It will be interesting to see what Durant plans when it comes to the future, and whether he wants to try his hand at coaching. Many believe that it would be a great move for the 38-year-old.
