Kevin O'Connell after the last loss: That will not define us

Things turned quickly for the Minnesota Vikings; just five days ago, they were 5-0 and at the top with the Kansas City Chiefs. After two losses, questions arise about their status as contenders. They now sit at 5-2, falling to the Los Angeles Rams, 30-20.

Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua's return boosted the Rams, who exploited Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores. The game started with rapid scoring: Darnold connected with Oliver for a touchdown, while Stafford found Williams. Darnold threw another touchdown to Sherfield, and Kupp scored from Stafford, making it four touchdowns in the first four drives.

Nacua posed a huge threat, reaching over 100 receiving yards by the third quarter, but Minnesota lost left tackle Derriso to injury. They briefly regained the lead with a field goal, but Stafford's third touchdown pass to Robinson gave the Rams their first lead.

Late in the third quarter, a dropped pass by Nailor cost the Vikings a chance to score. Stafford continued to dominate, finding Robinson for another touchdown. A late safety sealed Minnesota's fate. Stafford ended with four touchdown passes, while Darnold threw for 240 yards with two touchdowns but was sacked three times.

After the game, coach Kevin O'Connell talked about his team's performance. While he expected more from them, he didn't want to focus too much on individual players. He also chose not to criticize anyone else, including the referees. O'Connell sees this as an important lesson and a chance for his team to bounce back in the rest of the NFL season. Considering the potential of his team, it’s hard to blame anyone, and he hopes they will show what they can do in the next games.

"We just gotta find a way as a team, across the board, to play better," O'Connell said, as quoted by SI

"Not gonna make any kind of excuses about the short week, about penalties or anything like that. We'll get back to work. We're a 5-2 football team with a lot of football out in front of us. We need to work."

O'Connell put an accent on the need for improvement and returning to the strategies that helped the team reach a 5-2 record before their recent losses. He expressed strong trust in his coaching staff and confidence that the players in the locker room have both the talent and the right mindset to succeed.

The young coach doesn’t want to see this game as a failure, stressing that many teams face tough moments like this. He believes these kinds of games don’t really reflect on his team. The goal is to come back stronger, push harder in the next games, and fight for the top. He also revealed that he’ll expect the same commitment, effort in practice, and faith in the team from the players moving forward.

"We've, as a football team, had a lot of success this year and it's been a tough four days for us," O'Connell said.

"That will not define us. It will not be the story of this season because we hold the pen. And what are we gonna do with it? Are we gonna work? Am I going to be the same consistent guy just pushing this team even more, demanding the discipline to be our difference moving forward? I know I got the right team in there."

O'Connell is grateful

The coach expressed his gratitude for having the right coaching staff, feeling fortunate to work with such a supportive group. He acknowledged that the game didn’t go their way, especially after a tough loss the previous Sunday, which made things feel different for their season.

In a cohesive team, it's crucial to have people in every position who are willing to help and give their all for the team's progress. O'Connell aims to surround himself with players and staff who are dedicated to doing whatever it takes to reach their goals.

He emphasized that external narratives don’t matter; what counts is the hard work and unity of the team. He described his team and coaching staff as the closest group he’s ever been part of, expressing his love for the team and the role of head coach. He stressed the importance of pushing everyone to reach their full potential this season, believing that they have something special to achieve together.

It will be interesting to see if the Vikings learn from this loss and apply those lessons in their upcoming games. There's no doubt they can rise from this setback, prove that they just had a few off days, and get back on track. The competition this season is tough, and we'll soon find out the true potential of this team.
