The Witcher 4 star responds to claims of the game being woke

Yesterday marked the 10th anniversary of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and on that occasion, there was talk again about the future of the series. As you probably know, The Witcher 4 will have a new main character – instead of Geralt, his student Ciri, who was partially a playable character in the previous game, will take the stage.

When the game was first introduced a few months ago, this videogame also encountered some comments of disapproval of the protagonist. Since witchers are usually always men, some fans began to believe that CD Projekt RED was imposing some kind of feminist agenda and that The Witcher 4 would be “woke”.

Doug Cockle reacts

Actor Doug Cockle, the famous raspy voice of the witcher Geralt, has now spoken out about this. Cockle didn't mince words for those who are bothered by Ciri being the lead in the next game:

"That's stupid. There's nothing woke about it. Ciri is a cool character from The Witcher, we're going to focus on that character and that's great. We can't have Geralt in every game for eternity until we get sick of him. After all, we've seen the end of Geralt's journey - Blood and Wine concluded that story. I celebrate Ciri and I celebrate her being the lead. To all of you who think she's woke - ?. If you think she's woke, read the damn books. They're good." - Cockle said.

The third part of this game launched ten years ago today for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It was the game that concluded the trilogy about the witcher Geralt, but a good number of players encountered the world of the Witcher for the first time with Wild Hunt. The game had gained attention months earlier for its visual presentation that looked too good to be true, and interest in the game was helped by the fact that one of the most popular TV series at the time was Game of Thrones.

The release of this video game was delayed twice, and the audience was impatient. When the game launched, we didn’t quite get the graphics we had seen in the initial previews, but it was still one of the most visually beautiful games to date. The controversy over the graphics downgrade quickly died down, and the game was so good that many overlooked the problematic performance on consoles.

In terms of content, this project delivered on all its ambitions, which were a step ahead of everything else in open world games at the time. This video game combined freedom of exploration with an incredible amount of narrative, showing Bethesda the meaning behind the saying: “It just works”.
