Before entering the NBA, Victor Wembanyama had already captured the attention of Americans. Throughout the entire season, teams intentionally lost games to secure a poorer record and improve their chances for the first pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, aiming to select the French prodigy, standing at 224 centimeters tall. Ultimately, the rights to this talented player, formerly of Nanterre, Asvel, and Metropolitans, went to the San Antonio Spurs, where the popular "Wemby" joined under the guidance of Greg Popovich. Victor Wembanyama has already shown what fans wanted and has thrilled them.

Victor Wembanyama has become a true sensation and a player that many desired. Known as the "wonder boy," he has captivated the basketball community for various reasons, particularly his remarkable height. Wembanyama's stature is truly something extraordinary, setting him apart on the court and adding to the excitement surrounding his potential.

This outcome was ideal for both him and the franchise, which had been struggling since the departures of DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge, especially after losing the legendary trio of Tony Parker, Manu Ginóbili, and Kawhi Leonard, who was traded for DeRozan.

The Spurs have been missing a player like the young Wembanyama, who promises to become a basketball talent that many will respect and admire, leaving a lasting mark in the history of the sport. Of course, it’s too early to make definitive predictions about his career, but based on what we’ve seen so far, the young player has a solid foundation for achieving great success in the future. While some believe that the pressure and comparisons to previous greats could pose a challenge, it remains to be seen how things will unfold.

The Spurs quickly recognized his talent, and the entire NBA was enamored with Wembanyama, who finished second in the Defensive Player of the Year race, was named to the All-Defensive Team, and won Rookie of the Year with impressive averages of 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 3.9 assists. He also led the league in blocks last season.

Regarding Wembanyama's bright future, legendary NBA player Bob Cousy, now 96 years old, expressed his thoughts. Though born in New York, Cousy has French roots, as his parents were French immigrants, giving him a unique perspective on Wembanyama. The "first Frenchman" in the NBA closely follows developments in the league and is particularly interested in Wembanyama's career.

"Tell him he will be the next Bill Russell. Let him know that the first Frenchman in NBA history is watching him closely," Cousy remarked.

Cousy is a six-time NBA champion, 1957 MVP, and one of the greatest playmakers in history. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame, and his number 14 has been retired by the Boston Celtics. He played alongside Bill Russell, who won 11 championship titles and is considered one of the best defenders and players in NBA history.
